In July 2020, Salem Hospital’s Advanced Wound Center received the Center of Distinction Award from Healogics, Inc, recognizing outstanding clinical outcomes in wound healing rates and patient satisfaction achieved over 12 consecutive months in 2019. During this time, the wound center averaged a 92% healing rate and 96% patient satisfaction rate.

Salem Hospital clinical staff provide highly specialized wound care to patients suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections and other chronic wounds which have not healed in a reasonable amount of time.

The Center of Distinction Award is valid until July 2021 when Healogics Inc. will evaluate the Advanced Wound Center for award renewal based on 2020 performance. Healogics Inc. is the nation’s leading provider of advanced wound care and partners with 600 hospitals nationwide.

Designated
by the Lung Cancer Alliance, screening centers of
excellence meet the standards of the American College of Radiology, the
National Comprehensive Cancer Network and International Early Lung Cancer
Action Program. These standards are for controlling screening quality,
radiation dose and diagnostic procedures within an experienced,
multi-disciplinary clinical setting. Designees also commit to provide clear,
current information on who is a candidate for lung cancer screening.

Salem
Health first became a Lung Cancer Screening Center of Excellence in 2015,
receiving the distinction again in 2018 and was most recently reaffirmed in
2020. The next assessment will take place in January 2022.

In 2013, Oregon Health Authority accredited Salem Hospital emergency department
as a Level II Trauma Center, ready to care 24/7 for the Willamette
Valley’s most seriously injured patients. Trauma facilities are
designated as Level I, II, III, or IV,
with Level I and II centers offering the highest level of care. Level
II trauma centers provide care for severely injured patients of all
ages. Facility services and resource requirements are similar to Level
I.  

Every trauma patient who arrives in the Salem Hospital
emergency department is met by a trauma team with resuscitation
life-support equipment to ensure rapid evaluation and treatment.

Salem Hospital is scheduled to participate in a survey
conducted by OHA on July 30, 2021, for re-designation of its Level II
accreditation.

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses recognizes
hospital units that show remarkable collaboration, and high staff
morale. These units receive the Beacon Award for Excellence in bronze,
silver or gold. Honorees have also shown an emphasis on evidence-based
care and low hospital-acquired infection rates. Designations last for
three years.

In March 2018, Salem Hospital’s intermediate care unit
earned the Gold Beacon — the highest level award. This makes Salem
Health one of only six hospitals in Oregon to hold the gold designation.
Salem Hospital will be assessed again for this award in March 2020.

Salem Hospital's intensive care unit was
the first in Oregon to earn this award in 2007 — then earned three more
consecutive Silver Beacons before receiving the Gold Beacon award in
October 2018. Salem Hospital will be assessed again for this award in
October 2022.

Salem Hospital's cardiovascular care unit earned its second Silver Beacon in 2019. Salem Hospital will be assessed again for this award in October 2021.

In September 2020, Salem Health, in partnership with Hope Orthopedics of Oregon, was nationally recognized as a top provider of excellence in joint-replacement care for the fifth time. Salem Health first received the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for certification in joint replacements in 2012, before receiving it again in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

Salem Health Spine Center was recertified by the Joint Commission for the fifth time as an official Spine Center of Excellence (COE). Earning Center of Excellence recognition makes Salem Health Spine Center a role model for other spine centers all over the country to follow when they create their own programs.

Salem Hospital has received prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility.

Baby-Friendly USA, Inc is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

As of 2018, there are 469active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States. The Baby-Friendly designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. The award is maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps as demonstrated by quality processes.

In 2017, Salem Hospital received a Hope Award from the Pacific Northwest Transplant Bank. We also had the highest number of tissue donors in the area in 2016.

In 2011, the American College of Radiology’s Commission on Quality and Safety, and Commission on Breast Imaging designated Salem Health's women’s imaging department as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. To achieve this recognition, Salem Hospital earned accreditation in the Mammography Accreditation Program from the ACR and the following modalities: mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and breast MRI.  

Each accreditation remains valid for three years at which time hospitals apply for renewal. The BICOE certificate remains as long as a facility is fully accredited in all four modalities. Salem Hospital has remained fully accredited since 2011.

The Commission on Cancer — a quality program of the American College of Surgeons — is the only national accreditation program that recognizes cancer centers for their commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality and multidisciplinary patient-centered care. The three-year CoC accreditation is a voluntary commitment by a cancer program that ensures patients will have access to a full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support patients with cancer and their families.

The cancer program at Salem Health has been accredited by the CoC since 1952, demonstrating our commitment to local cancer care. Salem Health was last accredited in 2019 and will next undergo a CoC survey process in 2022.

In 2010, Salem Health’s Bariatric Surgery Center was named by the American College of Surgeons as an MBSAQIP-accredited Comprehensive Center. Salem Hospital received this accreditation again in 2013, 2016 and most recently in July 2019. The accreditation remains in effect until July 2023 when it will come up for review.            

The designation recognizes a consistent track record of favorable outcomes in weight-loss surgery.
